GenAI in Higher Education

Supporting faculty in exploring, understanding, and integrating AI technology into teaching and learning.

AI Literacy Student Support Course Design Academic Integrity

Welcome to the GenAI Workshop

This workshop provides a safe space for university faculty to explore generative AI in education. Through hands-on activities and guided exploration, you'll develop strategies for effectively supporting student learning in an era when AI tools are increasingly part of the academic landscape.

Workshop Overview

This interactive workshop consists of three main activities:

1. AI as Learning Companion

Experience firsthand how AI can help explain difficult concepts through multiple approaches, examples, and analogies.

2. Supporting Student Learning

Explore how students might use AI to understand challenging course concepts and develop strategies for effective integration.

3. Designing for AI-Enhanced Learning

Create authentic assessments and provide effective guidance for students in an AI-enhanced learning environment.

Why This Matters

Current Landscape

  • 45% of students are already using AI in their coursework
  • 85% of instructors have not yet incorporated AI into teaching
  • Students primarily use AI for writing, brainstorming, and understanding difficult concepts
  • Many instructors express concerns about critical thinking and learning retention

Workshop Benefits

  • Experience AI as a learning tool from the student perspective
  • Understand how AI can be a "force multiplier" for effective teaching practices
  • Design authentic assessments that promote learning in an AI-enhanced environment
  • Develop strategies for guiding students in appropriate AI use

Warmup: Persuasion Impossible

Before we dive into the main workshop activities, let's have some fun! Try using the AI chat below to tackle a creative persuasive challenge that would be difficult to achieve on your own. Consider the AI as someone to bounce your ideas off of.

Example Challenges:

  • Creating a compelling argument for a policy position that's opposite to your own beliefs
  • Convincing a skeptical colleague to try AI in their teaching
  • Crafting a message for an audience you've never taught before

This is a real AI chat!

You're actually interacting with ChatGPT in the box below. You can carry on a conversation with the AI as you normally would. Just know that responses may take a few moments as the API calls take place.

Hello! I'm here to help with persuasive challenges that might feel difficult or "impossible." What persuasive task would you like to explore? Share your challenge, and we'll collaborate to make the impossible possible!
