Welcome to the UDL Plus One Workshop
This workshop explores how Universal Design for Learning (UDL) can enhance teaching and learning experiences for all students, regardless of their abilities, backgrounds, or learning preferences. Based on the work of Thomas J. Tobin and Kirsten T. Behling, you'll learn how to implement the practical Plus One Approach to make your courses more accessible and engaging.
By the end of this session, you will:
- Experience both traditional and UDL-enhanced lessons firsthand
- Understand the three core principles of Universal Design for Learning
- Develop a concrete plan to enhance one aspect of your teaching
- Know how to continue building on your UDL implementation over time
Before we explore the Plus One Approach in detail, let's start by experiencing how small enhancements can significantly improve learning. Please select one of the topics below - preferably one you're less familiar with - to put yourself in your students' shoes.
Choose a Topic to Explore
Select one of the two topics below to get started. You'll experience the biggest effect if you choose one that you're not familiar with. You want to be in the seat of a student for this experience.
Modal Interchange
Discover how modal interchange can add emotional depth to music by borrowing chords from parallel modes.
Chi-Square Test of Independence
Learn how to determine whether two categorical variables are independent using the chi-square test.
About the Plus One Approach
The Plus One approach is a practical strategy for implementing Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles in your teaching. Rather than completely redesigning your courses, you add one alternative method of engagement, representation, or action/expression.
Multiple Means of Engagement
Provide options for recruiting interest, sustaining effort, and self-regulation to motivate and engage diverse learners.
Multiple Means of Representation
Present information in different formats to accommodate various learning styles and preferences.
Multiple Means of Action & Expression
Allow learners to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in various ways that suit their abilities.
